By Greg Lipke If you love living where you are now, then there is probably no need for you to move. However, after reading this chapter, you may start to develop itchy feet. The grass sometimes IS greener on the other side. What are the advantages of moving? Basically that depends on where you live now and on how you want to live. Moving to another country can reduce or eliminate income, corporate and capital gains taxes. Now I’ve got your attention. Here is the BUT If you live in the USA you are taxed by your government on your world-wide income regardless of where you live in the world. That’s rude. It may still be tax advantageous to move however. You won’t get taxed twice. If you move to a tax haven where there are no or minimal taxes you will still have to pay the IRS but you won’t have any paperwork to do in your new home. If you move to a non-tax haven with a double taxation treaty with the USA there are many options open to you usually for reducing your taxable income. Talk to an advisor who specializes in international taxation. I’m not an accountant. I’m not even American so the US taxation system is not something I am well versed in. However, I do know that significant tax savings are possible when properly structured. If you are a citizen of a country with a residency based taxation system, and most are, then your tax saving opportunities are much easier. Just move. The Turks and Caicos Islands The Turks & Caicos Islands - lie south east of the Bahamas. This country is a dependency of the UK. There is no income or company tax, gift tax, inheritance, property or sales taxes. Living and residency here is easy. It costs approximately US$2,000 for a permit to work or reside here. Don’t even think about looking for a job here, however. The country is democratic and the official language is English. 4. The Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic - ( not to be confused with the Commonwealth of Dominica) is one of the poorest countries in the Caribbean. It is located east of Haiti and west of Puerto Rico. This country is democratic and the official language is Spanish. All foreign earned income is tax free here and you can live like a king because everything is so cheap. If you are American, European, Canadian, British or Australian and have an external income your residency is virtually guaranteed. After 2 years you can apply for citizenship. 5. St Kitts and Nevis St Kitts & Nevis - is a small island group in the Caribbean north of Montserrat and west of Antigua & Barbuda. It is independent, democratic and English speaking. There is no income tax or tax for offshore companies. St Kitts & Nevis has a very good economic citizenship program, but it is expensive. This is the Rolls Royce option. It will cost you US$250,000 minimum investment in real estate, US$35,000 government fee for the main applicant, US$15,000 government fee per dependent, US$2,500 due diligence fees per adult and US$15,000 in application fees. This will give you full citizenship and a passport within approximately 3 months. This passport gives visa free travel to many countries as it is a British Commonwealth passport. 6. The Commonwealth of Dominica The Commonwealth of Dominica - ( not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) is an English speaking, democratic country. It has been independent since 1978. Dominica is located south of Guedeloupe and north of Martinique in the Caribbean. There are no income taxes or company taxes. Dominica is also a nature lovers dream. Dominica has a very good economic citizenship program. It will cost you US$75,000 government fee for a single applicant or US$100,000 government fee for a family of up to 4 people. Due diligence fees range from US$15,000 plus US$700 per person. This will get you full citizenship and a British Commonwealth passport within 4 months. 7. The Cayman Islands The Cayman Islands - consists of 3 islands in the Caribbean north west of Jamacia and south of Cuba. There are no income, inheritence or capital gains taxes. You can immigrate here if you have a spotless reputation and at least US$150,000. You must be financially independent and not have to depend on the local ecomony for an income. 8. Belize Belize - is paradise on earth. Belize is democratic, peaceful and there are no taxes. It is English speaking. Belize is located in Central America bordered by Mexico and Guatemala. Becoming a resident is relatively simple. If you stay for a year you are granted permanent residency. You just need to have your tourist visa renewed every 3 months for a year. You must deposit at least US$2,200 into a local bank. After 5 years as a permanent resident you are eligibile for citizenship. You can easily live a luxury lifestyle in this country without a lot of money. 9. Costa Rica Costa Rica - is located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama. Costa Rica has has its problems over the years but things are improving and it remains a popular retirement destination for many people. All income earned outside Costa Rica is tax free. To gain residency you must be able to prove you have an income of more than US$1,000 per month. You just need to have this income exchanged into local currency at a local bank and present the receipts to the Tourisn Institute every 2 years to renew your permit. This is another country where you can live like royalty with little money. Costa Rica is a Spanish speaking democracy. English is widely understood though. 10. Panama Panama - is located in Central America between Costa Rica and Columbia. Panams is a well established international financial centre with very attractive residency possibilities. Panama is a Spanish speaking country where English is well known. Income earned from outside Panama is tax free. This democracy is a first world country and Panama city could be mistaken for Miami. Panama has three residency options: The Panama Investor Immigration Program requires an investment of at least US$100,000 in a new company or business or in any business in the country employing at least 3 Panamanian citizens. The investors must be directors & officers of the company. OR, you can invest US$40,000 in a reforestation project. After 5 years with this residency permit you can apply for Panamanian citizenship and passport. The Pamana Retiree Residence Program requires you to invest enough money in a term deposit at the Banco Nacional de Panama to generate at least US$750 per month in interest for a minimum of 5 years. By William Bell, Jr. From Fear and Fascination to Faith and Facts My first encounter with the book of Revelation was fear. Who didn’t get a few chills running down their spine about the number 666, the “mark of the beast,” the seven plagues and this dramatic portrayal of the endtime? That fear kept me from wanting to know more about this book, though I was drawn to it. Then I stumbled across a study that made an intelligent versus fanciful media-hyped approach to the book. It addressed it as a coded message, but written to the first century church who were part of its history and time. That evidence focused on the date of the book. It raised and answered the question, was it written pre or post A.D. 70? Thirdly, an investigation of the internal evidence and alignment with other texts as commentary overruled the temptation to rely on imagination and the media. This was one of the most enlightening and satisfying decisions in my quest to understand the message of Revelation. What follows are a few keys that were convincing to me. What Is A Mystery? A mystery is not something which cannot be known, but simply that which is not known until it is revealed. The seven points in this article are now a mystery, but if you read further, they will become manifest to you. In Revelation, “Babylon” is a code word for the mystery city. The book is not about ancient Babylon nor modern day Iraq. Babylon was used as a sign to disguise in military-type code, the identity of the city. Why? It’s because this city was marked for destruction. The political climate of the day made it extremely dangerous to speak openly of destroying this city, (Acts 6:14) especially by Christians who were viewed as its chief enemies. The preaching of Jerusalem’s impending destruction led to Stephen’s martyrdom, (Acts 7). Its connection with ancient Babylon was its moral decay and idolatry. Ancient Babylon’s fall was precipitated by their pride and disrespect for God, the persecution of God’s people and the profaning of the temple’s holy vessels . Thus Belshazzar’s feast led to the demise of his kingdom. Hence the term Mystery Babylon. 1. “The Great City, –Where The Lord Was Crucified) Further identifying Mystery Babylon as the great city (Revelation 17:18; 18:10), leads us to clue number one. The great city of Revelation is identified as the city spiritually called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.” (Revelation 11:8) Besides the actual city, there is only one city in the Bible ever referred to as Sodom. It is Jerusalem, (Deuteronomy 32:32; Isaiah 1:10). The description, where also our Lord was crucified is strong evidence pointing to Jerusalem. Further, it could not be that a prophet perish outside of Jerusalem, Luke 13:33. Jerusalem was called the city of the great King. (Matthew 5:35) To the Jews it was the greatest city in the world. 2. The Golden Cup of Abominations The imagery of the filled cup of iniquity indicates that God’s period of longsuffering had run its course. Genesis 15:16 shows why God expelled the Amorites from the land in order that Israel might inherit Canaan. The reason he did not do so immediately was because the iniquity of the Amorites was not yet full. Their cup of sin yet had room for more and did not run its course until the time of the Exodus. Jesus spoke to the people of Jerusalem warning them that they would fill up the measure of their father’s guilt in killing the prophets. See point #3. Paul says they had filled up the measure of their sins and would experience the coming wrath. (1 Thessalonians 2:14-16). 3. God Would Avenge All The Righteous Blood Shed on Earth By Jerusalem. Mystery Babylon was guilty of shedding the blood of the apostles and prophets, (Revelation 18:20). However, God avenged the blood of the apostles and prophets. Not only was their blood be avenged, but God avenged all the blood shed on the earth on Mystery Babylon, (v. 24). Jesus predicted the same for Jerusalem. In Matthew 23:34-37, Jerusalem is charged with the blood guilt of all the righteous blood shed on the earth up to that time. Jesus would send more wise men, scribes and prophets whom he said they would scourge in their synagogues and persecute from city to city until he destroyed Jerusalem. It therefore matches perfectly with this description. 4. The “Mystery Babylon” Was Once a Queen. This identifies the city as having a covenant relationship with God. Neither ancient Rome, nor any other modern city could appropriately be styled as God’s wife. Through the Old Covenant, God was married to Jerusalem, (Jeremiah 2:14). Because of her unfaithfulness, God threatens divorce. While Mystery Babylon claims to be a queen, she is widowed. (Revelation 18:7) 5. The Antithesis of the Two Cities The contrast of the two cities in Revelation are a strong clue to the identity of Mystery Babylon. After the great city, Mystery Babylon is destroyed, God blesses a New Jerusalem. That implies an Old Jerusalem. This is the same antithesis running throughout the New Testament expressed in covenantal terms. (See Galatians 4:24-26; Hebrews 8:6-13; 12:18-23). The new Jerusalem however is not an earthly city but one which comes down out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, (Revelation 21:1-3). Paul writes that the church is the bride of Christ, 1 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:23-31, Hebrews 12:22, 23). The new holy city Jerusalem, takes the position as bride while the former adulterous wife receives death by fire. 6. Come Out of Her My People The call to God’s people to come out of Mystery Babylon” (Revelation 18:4) further aligns with the ancient city of Jerusalem. Prior to its destruction, Jesus warned that his disciples should flee the city to avoid its plagues of destruction, famine and death. (Matthew 24:15-17; Luke 21:20-22). 7. Trodden Down of the Gentiles In Luke 21:24, Jesus remarks that Jerusalem would be trodden down of the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles were fulfilled. Unfortunately, today, many believe the Gentiles are rulers over the people of God. This is impossible as that period ended in A.D. 70 when Rome destroyed Jerusalem. It was the time when all things written were fulfilled, coming to pass before that generation passed away, (Luke 21:22, 32). As old Jerusalem was once called the faithful and holy city, John prophesied that it was measured for destruction, (Revelation 11:2). Old Jerusalem Is A Perfect Match Everything said about Jerusalem in the gospels, is symbolically described for Mystery Babylon in the book of Revelation. There are more contrasts and parallels but these should at least get one thinking. Fanciful and colorful charts as those presented by John Hagee and others will forever fail to properly identify the Mystery Babylon as long as they are pointed in the future and toward some city or nation that has no antithesis with old Jerusalem. Further, a modern or present day Jerusalem, does not descend from heaven and can never be the holy city of Revelation 21. The message and meaning of Revelation seems best and most easily understood when one values the shortly to come to pass, time is at hand time parameter of the message keeping it within a contemporary, historical setting of its first century hearers, (Revelation 1:1, 3. And for those people who never have to worry about their weight… we all hate you! We live in the era of the trendy diets like The Zone and Atkins. We live in the pill-for-everything nation with drugs like hoodia, ephedra, cortisol, caffeine pills and appetite suppressants. But no matter what your drug or diet of choice is… it will never rid your mind of your weight loss worries. America. We are the fattest nation in the world! We are the nation of the quick fix, the quick meal, and most importantly… fast food. For those of you who have seen Super Size Me you saw a man in peak physical health start eating a diet of only McDonalds for a month. At the end of the month, he was fatter, looked physically disgusting and sick, got out of breathe while climbing up 6 steps, and he had doctors begging him to stop. Did this proof stop Americas fast food obsession….. nope! We are still the nation with sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and with people on disability because they are too overweight function normally in society. But wait! We are constantly bombarded with the latest pills, supplements, diets, programs, gyms, trainers, and exercise equipment which leaves our heads spinning! Now when you think of it in the cynical, suspicious way that I do… the fast food industry is making us fat, then the weight loss industry jumps in to save the day… coincidence?… conspiracy?… well save that for another article. Whats more important is that we are all being manipulated by these industries because we are lost! We dont trust ourselves to know how to lose weight because we are the ones who let ourselves put it on in the first place. So we read all the books, go to all the web sites, watch all the infomercials trying to see whos got it. Whos right, whos got the secret, who is the weight loss god that will fix us for good and as quickly as possible. Were looking to all of these other people when all we really have to do is listen to ourselves, our bodies, and just plain logic. Think back to grade school. We learned in gym class that we need exercise and it can be fun and make us feel good. We learned about the food pyramid which, though it has recently been updated, still tells us that we need a balanced diet. I specifically remember in 8th grade biology class, learning about fats (lipids), carbs (starches, and sugars), and proteins (big chains of amino acids.) We learned that each of these substances has a certain amount of calories and that your body uses these calories as energy to keep your body working. Were burning a couple hundred calories just sitting in a chair for and hour. This is just all basic stuff that most people have been taught already…. DID WE ALL FORGET THIS!? Or do we all just want the miracle cure for gaining weight? In the 90s it was all about nonfat and reduced-fat. We all thought, hey, if what Im eating has no fat in it, I cant get fat from eating it! WRONG! All they did was up the carb count and in some cases the calorie count too. But we didnt want to see that. In the new millennium we copied the super skinny celeb actors (who, by the way, arent just getting skinny for the sake of vanity, but to keep their jobs.) And the no-carb, low-carb revolution began! We all stopped eating starches, dropped a whole bunch of water weight in the first two weeks because we had no carbs in our systems to hold onto it anymore… leaving us constipated and crying at the sight of the bread basket at the restaurant table because we couldnt have any. Dont get me wrong, I agree that sugar (as in candy) and other simple sugars should not be a regular part of your diet and my dentist would agree too. However, to deny yourself of a whole food group for God knows how long, is just plain stupid! So what does that leave us with? Everything that we learned when we were young! What it all comes down to is the amount of calories you are ingesting should be in close proximity to the amount that your body naturally burns off on its own everyday. If you wanna burn off a little more and lose some weight… stick to a balanced diet and throw some exercise in there. And this doesnt mean that you should start waking up at 6 am to run 5 miles, or to join a gym and go 4 times a week for 2 hours at a time. Because I know from experience that if you do that, youll burn yourself out and never want to exercise again! Exercise just means to up your level of activity from the level your body is used to on a normal day. Dont have much free time? So, park your car further away from the stores entrance in the parking lot than you normally would. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, even just for one flight. Walk your dog down the block and back instead of just letting him out the back door (trust me, it doesnt take as long as you think and your pup will love you for it!) Be smart. Be logical. Dont rationalize eating McDonalds for lunch everyday just because you ran a mile that morning. (Youll be screwing with your heart in more ways than one.) And Im sorry, there just arent any miracles that will make you lose 20lbs. in 2 days. Suck it up! Realize that it took you awhile to put your weight on… its gonna take awhile to take it off… as it should. However impatient we are, our bodies still need time to adjust to any change in activity, stress, and weight. And unless youre a successful model or and actor (which I doubt your are if youre reading this), youre not getting paid for how good you look on camera. So put down the copy of People magazine, stop telling yourself you need to look like that and give yourself a friggin break! Give your body a break.
